Russel Smith Water Corp

Russel Smith Water CorpLocal man Russell Fitzgerald did not realise when he walked in to seek assistance from Directions’ Aboriginal Training and Employment team in Northam that he was kick starting his career in the water industry.

Russell recently commenced a water operator industry traineeship with the Water Corporation at their Ag West Depot in Northam. He is currently working alongside their maintenance team, learning to repair burst pipes and carry out maintenance at wastewater plants.

Russell is also learning to take water quality samples, interact with customers, and how to read the maps which show the locations, sizes, and details of water and wastewater pipe networks.

Larry Bayley, Operations Manager said, ‘Russell is highly motivated and every day he comes in very eager to get on with the job. He is a pleasure to mentor.’

Russell was given career guidance support from Aboriginal Training and Employment Coordinator Brenda De Atta, who worked with him to develop a career action plan and identify suitable career pathways.

Russell was then assisted to develop his resume and guided through the application process for the traineeship at Water Corporation.
