New Year – New Starters – Perth’s New Rail Project

Matthew Vagg and Patrick Wright at the Forrestfield Tunnel Site

Second-year carpentry and joinery apprentices Matthew Vagg and Patrick Wright have kicked off 2018 starting work on the Forrestfield Airport Link Tunnel project earlier this month.

Salini Impregilo-NRW Joint Venture (SI-NRW) were awarded the $1.176 billion contract for design and construction as well as a ten year maintenance period once the project is completed, scheduled for late 2020. The project, which started in late 2016, will deliver a new 8.5km rail service to the eastern suburbs of Perth, with three new stations to be built at Belmont, Airport Central and Forrestfield. The rail link will connect with the existing Midland Line near Bayswater Station and will run to Forrestfield through underground tunnels, ensuring minimal impact on the existing land and road network.

Both apprentices told Directions’ Manager – Construction Steve Thomas that they were excited about being part of this significant project.
