Industry, Success Stories

Directions’ second-year wall and floor tiling apprentice Jason Swan has been nominated for the state WorldSkills challenge which will take place in WA in 2019.

Jason was nominated by his lecturer Iain Middleton from South Metropolitan TAFE Rockingham campus.

“Jason’s attention to detail, speed and clean up, as well as his attitude, are great.” Iain told Directions’ Apprentice Manager – Construction, Steve Thomas.

“He has huge potential.”

The WorldSkills competitions develop and showcase skills excellence. This global movement has over 75 member countries, that meet every two years to compete in over 50 skills categories. They aim to raise the status of skilled vocations throughout the world.

Perth last hosted the event for Australia in 2014. 2018 is the national competition year where 2017 State winners will compete for an opportunity to showcase their skills at the international level.

Jason, Directions, host company Hanssen, and South Metropolitan TAFE are all excited for and committed to helping Jason prepare for the challenge ahead.

Jason is currently one of 13 Directions apprentices hosted by Hanssen at their Aurelia project in South Perth who have him working with subcontractor De Mostai Wall and Floor Tiling. Ken Kwang Yoon from De Mostai have had significant involvement in Jason’s on the job training over the past two years, helping him get him to the standard that has seen him nominated for the challenge.
