West Australian building company Hanssen Pty Ltd have received recognition for their significant contribution to apprentice and trainee training and employment by winning Host Employer of the Year at the WA Apprentice Employment Network’s (AENWA) annual Awards of Excellence.
The awards recognise excellence across the West Australian group training network members and their clients. Winners were announced at a gala awards evening at Burswood on Swan, attended by representatives from group training organisations, employers, apprentices and trainees, and stakeholders from across the State.
Hanssen was nominated by Directions in recognition of their commitment and continuing effort to support skills development in the construction industry, and the successful relationship the two companies have built through their shared goal of making a difference.
Hanssen has provided over 1,200 apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities since it was formed in 1992. With construction trades among some of the most significant skills shortages in WA, Hanssen’s willingness to continue to provide not only large numbers of apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities but in particular, opportunities for commencing first years, sets them apart from many in the industry.
Hanssen believes in “giving everyone a go” and provides many opportunities for those often disadvantaged or under-represented in apprenticeships and traineeships. Of the current cohort employed by Directions and hosted by Hanssen, 10% are adult apprenticeships, 63% are in designated skills shortage occupations, and almost 9% are indigenous. All the female apprentices and trainees to date have been women in non-traditional trades. Hanssen also has provided placements for paroled prisoners looking to get their lives back on track, overcoming one of the biggest obstacles; employment. Combined, well over 80% of the total number of Hanssen apprentices and trainees fall into one of the priority client groups, and many fall into more than one.
Hanssen believe they can’t afford not to train and they practice what they believe and Directions is very proud to see them win this accolade.
